Roommates

What's the best chore app for roommates?

If cleaning is the only problem, use a cleaning app: Tody plans each task by how often it needs doing and rotates it, and Sweepy turns cleaning into points with a house leaderboard. If your house also splits rent and bills, it helps to keep the chores where the money is: in TableCash the turns rotate on their own, roommates tap Done from a link without the app, and the rent is on the same board. Chores in TableCash are free.

First: is it only the cleaning?

A lot of houses download a chore app when the real argument is money: who's behind on the internet bill, who never buys toilet paper. If it really is just the cleaning, a cleaning app is the simplest fix. If chores and money are tangled up, one place for both means one link and one thing to check.

Tody: the most detailed cleaning plan

Tody gives every task its own rhythm (wipe the counters daily, the fridge monthly) and shows what's due. Shared plans sync to everyone's phone, tasks rotate automatically, and FairShare sets a monthly target so the work evens out. Household plans run $25 a year for two people up to $80 a year for twelve, with a 30-day free trial.

Sweepy: if your house likes a game

Sweepy scores each task 1 to 3 points and keeps streaks and a leaderboard across the house. Some roommates love the competition; some houses find a scoreboard makes things tenser. It's free, with a Premium plan that builds a daily schedule for you.

Flatastic and HomeCo: chores plus the rest of the flat

Both pair a chore rotation with shopping lists and a tab of shared expenses. Flatastic is free with a Premium plan; HomeCo is £2.99 a month per person or £9.99 a month for the whole home. Good if you want one app for the flat and nobody's in charge of the money.

TableCash: chores next to the rent

The person who runs the house adds the chores and how often each repeats (every day, week or two weeks), and the turns go around the house in order. Everyone else opens one link, sees their turn at the top of their board and taps Done. Anyone can mark a supply as out, and whoever's turn it is to buy sees it. There are no points or leaderboards on purpose: just whose turn it is and a record of who did what. The rent and bills, house rules and repairs live on the same board. Step by step: a roommate chore chart that takes turns on its own.
