Shared houses

How do you collect rent from roommates when the lease is in your name?

Set the rent once, give each roommate their own share, and pick a due date a little before the landlord's. Then send everyone one link. Each roommate sees their part, pays it by card or tells you they paid another way, and you can see who has paid before you pay the landlord. That's how TableCash works: you use the app, and your roommates use the link.

When the lease is in your name

If you signed the lease (some people call this being the master tenant or the leaseholder), the landlord gets one rent payment, from you. Whether everyone else paid you first is your problem. Most people handle it with a group chat, a note on their phone and a Venmo request every month, and they're the one who has to ask every time.

Set it up once

  1. Get TableCash on your phone and set up the house. Add the rent and give each roommate a share: even, by room (a big room, a small room, a couple sharing one), or any amount you type.
  2. Pick the due date and set the rent to repeat every month.
  3. Text one link to your group chat. Each roommate opens it on their phone or laptop, taps their name and types a code we email them. They don't need the app.
  4. Each roommate sees their part of the rent and the day it's due. They pay it by card, or tap that they paid you another way (Venmo, Zelle, cash) and you confirm it.
  5. Anyone who hasn't paid gets a reminder 3 days and 1 day before the due date, by email if they only use the link. You don't have to send it.

Everyone in the house can see how much has come in for the month and how many people have paid, so nobody has to ask you, and you don't have to ask them.

Pick a due date before the landlord's

A card payment goes to your own account, through Stripe. New money waits a few days before you can cash it out: 7 days, or 2 days once you verify your ID. A standard cash out to your bank then takes 2 to 3 business days, and it's free from $50 ($0.99 under $50). So if the landlord wants rent on the 1st, ask the house for it around the 20th. Money a roommate sends you another way, like Zelle, is already yours.

What it costs

The app is free to download, and so are the chores, reminders and house info. When a roommate pays by card, a TableCash fee of 3.5% plus $1.49 comes out of that payment, or they can add it on top so you get their whole share. On an $800 share that's $29.49. A payment marked as paid another way has no TableCash fee. Every fee, hold and refund rule.

You still pay the landlord

TableCash doesn't pay your landlord. You pay the rent the way you do now, from money that has already come in. TableCash never holds the money: a card payment goes straight to you, and the app is the record of who paid what.

When someone moves out, plan it in the app with the date and who's moving in. On that day the new person takes over the share and the chore turns. Still working out the numbers? Try the split rent calculator, and write the rest down in a roommate agreement before anyone moves in.

You run the house. Everyone else just opens a link.
